As CEO and Founder, Tobi Saulnier oversees company operations and product development at independent studio 1st Playable Productions. Prior to founding 1st Playable, she was VP of Product Development at Vicarious Visions, where she was responsible for delivering over 60 game titles. Tobi became a proponent of using formal software methodologies as a way to help control overtime and scope creep, and led the introduction of the Personal Software Process first at Vicarious Visions, and this year at 1st Playable Productions. Tobi learned about formal methods while at General Electric Research and Development, where she also led initiatives in new product development and software quality.

 

Better Games Via Formal Production Processes

Process and creativity can seem to go together like oil and water, but as game development gets more complex, we've seen steps towards structured production processes to bring some sanity to game production. There have been promising success stories. Personal Software Process, Scrum, Test-Driven Development - but choosing one that's right for your studio and getting started on new habits can be daunting. In this lecture we will provide an overview of the Personal Software Process as applied at both a small and large studio, review other promising processes, identify prerequisites for success, point out pitfalls, and help the audience member assess what might work well in their studio.
