Alternate Reality Games: Check Your Joystick at the Door

"I Love Bees" (Halo 2) and "The Beast" (for Steven Spielberg's AI: Artificial Intelligence) were examples of a new genre of entertainment, Alternate Realty Games, which played out on websites, phone lines, emails, faxes, street tagging, television, print, sky writing, and live actors on the streets, these experiences are real world applications of the movie The Game (starring Michael Douglas), and revel in blurring the line between fiction and reality. This session will explore Alternate Reality Games, where they've come from, where we're taking them, and the new ways to think about entertainment and storytelling when your game refuses to acknowledge that it isn't real.

Takeaway: An understanding of Alternate Reality Games...also, I might bring cookies.

Intended audience: Troublemakers, rebels, and anyone else interested in revolutionary forms of storytelling.
